New Concord is a rural, lakeside community in Calloway County about 15 minutes southeast of Murray. Drive through beautiful Calloway farmland to arrive at this community on Kentucky Lake. It is plentiful in water view and water accessible properties that follow the curvy landscape of the lake shore. It’s one of the only communities in Calloway that’s on the lake, and while it doesn’t have much in the way of business, it is near neighboring towns that do. This tucked away area is a nice place for a lake cabin retreat for the weekends, or a peaceful place to reside.
New Concord is on the beautiful waters of Kentucky Lake and near Lake Barkley, both of which are excellent for fishing, boating, and water sports. You could explore the waters all the time and still have more to discover with over 3,000 miles of shoreline between the lakes! Enjoy lakeside restaurants like Ralph’s Harborview Grill at Moors Resort, that you can get to by boat, if you choose, and enjoy a delicious southern cooked meal with a view. Cypress Springs Resort and Marina is just south of New Concord and has overnight accommodations, a marina and restaurant. Their restaurant sits on the water and is a great place to get some fried catfish with all the traditional fixins! Cindy’s on the Barge is the floating restaurant at the Kenlake Marina at Kenlake State Park. This cute eatery recently has been renovated with a fresh, clean nautical feel. Here you can view the boats coming in and out of the harbor while you enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast with their house-made sausage or one of their half pound burgers with crispy onion rings or fries. Browse the gift shop to look for fun Kentucky Lake merch and then walk off the meal on the lovely Kenlake grounds. This sprawling resort has a hotel with a swimming pool, cabins to rent, playgrounds, tennis courts, and multiple picnic areas. About 10 minutes south of New Concord and LBL, Paris Landing State Park in Tennessee is a great getaway! This park has a marina and boat rentals, along with accommodations that include 3 bedroom cabins and one room “camp cabins” for the camping experience without the tent. They also have a campground with full hookups with sites viewing the lake. With a myriad of water sports, fishing, and an 18 hole golf course on property, Paris Landing State Park has so much to offer. All of this overlooks the widest part of beautiful Kentucky Lake such provides stunning views!
Take the adventures across the lake at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) Recreational Area. With over 100 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, horse riding trails, camping facilities, several picnic areas, historical landmarks, and nature explorations there is so much to do! For the astronomy enthusiast, there’s a planetarium to learn more about the Kentucky night sky at the Golden Pond Visitor’s Center! The Homeplace 1850 Working Farm is on the south end of LBL and is an amazing historic experience! Step back in time when you visit this replica frontier-style settlement and experience what it would have been like to live in the olden days. Walk through primitive log homes that are fully furnished exactly as they would’ve been in 1850! Explore the farm see how the “homesteading” was really done when they relied so heavily on their own land and labor. The Homeplace gives tours and offers additional special events throughout the year. Over Labor Day weekend, they hold the annual “Trade Days” where you can come to learn more about trades and crafts like weaving, candle making, pottery, farming and more. Children can participate in the fun by learning how to make their own pottery bowls like they did long ago, and crafting their own to take home! Purchase handmade goods such as corn husk dolls, wooden toys, and natural bar soaps to bring a touch of history with you. The beautiful, secluded location in the middle of LBL is part of what draws people to come here, because you are away from all technology and modern convenience and remember the best of the past. The Homeplace is just one of many fun educational opportunities in LBL, but there’s even more in the area to see! The history buff will enjoy a visit to Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover, TN. home to both Fort Donelson and Ft. Herman. These sites were a part of the American Civil War and played at important role in our area’s history! The Confederate army built this fortress, now turned park, that overlooks the Cumberland River. Explore the preserved remains of the fortress and the river batteries, and learn why this fortress was so important. The park also holds a National Cemetery where over 600 Union solders have been laid to rest, and the Dover Hotel which is the only remaining original building onsite!
New Concord is the lake-side sister town to Murray, home of Murray State University, which is just a short drive away. The Murray Downtown Farmers Market on the charming court square is a great place to support your local farmer on Saturday mornings in the summer. They offer locally grown produce, farm-raised meat, scratch-made baked goods, jellies and jams, plants, hand-crafted wooden items, and local coffee, and even more! Murray has several nice coffee shops including Shaffer Coffee which hosts “Live on the Lawn” music on Friday nights each summer featuring local artists. There are some fantastic antique stores, gift shops, and boutiques around town, and entertainment continues at the Cheri Theaters cinema and Corvette Lanes bowling alley, which just had an extensive overhaul renovation! In the fall and winter, MSU basketball and football games are exciting to attend, and big-name concerts are held on campus, as well. Murray is known for their especially good eats. For an outstanding steak dinner, visit The Alley Steakhouse which is just above a Corvette Lanes bowling alley. This beautiful restaurant has candlelight ambience and a talented piano player each weekend. They serve delicious seafood and pasta, but are well-known for their juicy, aged, hand-cut steaks! Their side dishes are just as noteworthy, like the sweet whiskey green beans, lobster mac & cheese, and one pound sweet potatoes. Each meal is served with soft rolls and real butter that melts in your mouth. Do yourself a favor, and get a slice of their New York style cheesecake with their signature sweet tea glaze! For a taste of international cuisine with vegetarian options, visit The Willow Bistro, just across the street. This quaint restaurant is a local favorite. Set in a historic Murray home, this family owned and operated business serves made-from-scratch food daily. Their falafel is delicious, especially on the Greek gyros with soft pita and homemade tzatziki sauce. They also serve Asian style curries, tacos, made-to-order guacamole, huge salads and hot sandwiches. Quench your thirst with a glass of their freshly squeezed lemonade or cozy up with fair-trade French pressed coffee. The upstairs rooms can be reserved for more privacy or larger parties, or sit on the open-air front porch on a lovely day! There are a number of fantastic pizzerias around town, Asian cuisine, and Mexican restaurants—all a short drive from New Concord.
